6/19/2005 About Kurt Cobain(2)If i were asked to describe Kurt in some words,i think i would say:"sensitive fragile emotional ...but brave". Imagin a boy who enjoyed his life before he was 8 years old suddenly lost his family and had to live under a bridge,Kurt had to taste the feeling of being lonely at a too-young age.Maybe for this reason,Courtney Love who shared the similar with him became his wife in the future. He was shy, never tended to attract people's attention. So when he shoot to fame ,he got really confused.Sometimes he meant to write about something really serious in his lyrics, but most of the time he failed.Once he even found "Polly"which is a serious song was used in a bad place for people to dance to,which made him feel very sad.The more famous he turned ,the more attention people paid to him.He didn't like it,he felt uneasy. He wrote this kind of feeling into his lyrics saying he didn't want to live, satirizingly, people took this as "cool",they loved him more for this.Kurt was not used to this,he was not used to see thousands people imitating him ,shouting his name, taking everything he did as heroic deed. He turned to death. No one is sure why he did this.He was cited with a shotgun in Seattle, days later he was found suicided. No one knows how did he spend his last few days alone ,maybe confused by his life and then lost hope for life and finally got desperated?I don't know... People may think he was weak inside.Maybe, but i still think he's brave. At least he tried to fight, tried to be brave,to express what he wanted to say...he tried ,hard!!! ... 6/17/2005 J.R.R Tolkien'childhood and his book(2)About Tolkien's book i think i must discuss later, right now,i wanna say something about his childhood. Tolkien's father died when he was very young, and not long after that,he lost his mother.Young Tolkien was then rased up by his aunt. When he was very young,Tolkien was surrounded by beautiful countryside view,he loved there;but when he had to move to London to live with his aunt, everything changed. The city was crowded by lots of people, tall buildings hiding the sky,the whold impression that London left to Young Tolkien was dirty,crowd,dark...There,impossible to see anything green. He didn't like that! And this,we can easily find in his books.Hobbits live in Shire, where sky is blue grass is green. And Lothlorin,Rivendell, everywhere that is the symbol for good has beautiful view,in there,Tolkien filnally realized his dream that make the world covered by green. And at last,Samwise Gamgee saved Shire using Galadriel's present which made him my hero. To be frank, one of the reasons why i love Tolkien is this.I grew up in country side, and i love there, the same as Tolkien,i lost that, but Tolkien lost that coz he left there,i lost that coz some stupid instruction program(i hate it!).I really want someone like Sam who can save that ... 6/11/2005 About J.R.R Tolkien(1)J.R.R Tolkien is my faviourite writer, the reason why i haven't talked about him earlier is i didn't know how to. John Ronald Reuel Tokien (1892--1973)was a major scholar of the English language, specialising in Old and Middle English .Twice Professor of Anglo-Saxon(Old English) at the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including most famously THE HOBBIT(1937)and THE LORD OF THE RINGS(1954--1955),which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of the world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth.This was peopled by Men (and women),Elves,Dwarves,Orcs(or Goblins)and of course Hobbits. He has regularly been condemned by the Eng.Lit.establishment ,with honourable exceptinos, but loved by literally millins of readers worldwide. In the 1960s he was taken up by many members of the nascent"counter-culture"largely because of his concern with environmental issues. In 1997 he came top of three British polls, organized respectively by Channel 4/Waterstone's ,the Folio Society ,and SFX the UK's leading science fiction media magazing, amongs discerning readers asked to vote for the greatest book of the 20th century. I'll continue later... 5/28/2005 About Kurt Cobain(1)Speaking of Rock n' Roll, every article will mention a band"NIRVANA".Yes,the band is the most famous in the USA in the ninteenth century. And Kurt Cobain who is the vocal and gitarist is the leader of NIRVANA . Cobain was born on the 20th in February 1967 in Hoquaim,a small town 140kilometres south-west of Seattle. His mother was a cocktail waitress and his father was an auto mechanic.Cobain soon moved to nearby Aberdeen,a depressed and dying logging town. For most of his childhood,Cobain was a sickly bronchitic boy.Things got worse when his parents divorced when he was seven . After his parents' divorce,Cobain found himself shuttled back and forth between various relatives and at one stage he even got so homeless that had to live under a bridge. When Cobain was eleven he heard and was attracted by "SEX AND PISTOLS"and after tbeir self-destruction he and his friend Krist Novoselic continued to listen to the wave of British bands . Cobain and Krist and a drummer Dave Grohl formed the band NIRVANA in 1987. In 1988 NIRVANA released their first single"Love Buzz/Big Cheese"and then in 1989 their first album"Bleach".Among all the albums ,"Nevermind"seems to be the best one. In Feburary 1992,Cobain went to Hawaii to marry his already pregnant Courtney Love.In August Cobain had hospital treatment for heroin abuse.Shortly after Fracnces Bean Cobain was born. On March 4th Cobain was rushed to hospital in a coma after an unsuccessful suicide bid in which he washed down about fifty prescription painkillers with champagne. The suicide bid was officially called and accident and was not even made known to close friends and associates.Several days later he returned to Seattle. Cobain was cited in the Seattle area with a shotgun.Days later on 5th of April he barricaded himself into the granny flat behind his mansion, put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.Cobain's body was found when an electrician visiting the house to install a security system went round the back of the house when no one answered the front door and peered through windows. He noticed a splotch of blood coming out of Cobain's ear. When police broke into the down they found Cobain dead on the floor,a shotgun still pointed at his chin and on a nearby counter there was a suicide note written in red ink addressed to Love and their then 19 mouth baby daughter Frances Bean. And the suicide note ended with the words I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU ......
PS: Their released albums are as follows: Bleach(1989) Incesticide(1992) In Utero(1993) Nevermind(1994) Unplugged In New York(1994) Since Cobain's death, there were some albums released as "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah"(1996)and "Nirvana"(2002). 1/29/2005 About Virginia Woolf(2)I still don't intend to talk about her works. The more i want to say,the less i find myself know about her. Grow up in her father's study with a huge number of books,Virginia didn't go to school. As she complained in her letter in her middle age, there was no school no friend. These add her poor health meant she didn't have a happy childhood as a girl in her age should have. In her youth, she was sexually abused by her half-brother,after her mother's death, her sister who took the position to take care of the family died only a few years later. Then was her father who died slowly from cancer, when it finally came to her brother Toby in 1906,she was mentally breakdown. Virginia's mental illness was a obstacle for her life. When the illness began, she would hear noises that did not exsit actually. After World War One,there was a time when her illness was so serious that Leo decided to move to the countryside from London. However Virginia didn't like that idea at all.In countryside she can't find the passion needed for her writing. She felt so bored that she even tried to escape (as we can see in the movie"The Hours").During this period she began the novel"Mrs.Dalloway".In that book she showed how she loved London in the mouth of Clarissa. As many writers,Virginia was in fact living two kinds of lives. One was in the real world ,the other was in her books. The different is,at her time, novels people wrote were not the kind that Virginia wrote.People were writing about something outside, but Virginia was writing something inside.People wrote more about matters, but Virginia was writing something about human beings. She wrote about commen persons like Clarissa who was a rich hostess spending her days preparing for different kinds of parties,or Mrs Ramsay who was a grace woman and at the same time a wife and a mother--she died leaving a lot to recall...Virginia not only wanted to describe things, she wanted to describe everything---the colors, the smells, the tasted.the sounds...all kinds of feelings. She put us in a stereoscopic surrounding where the story occured as if we were there too. Maybe the best way to understand her was to read her novels.Well, that's all for today. 1/27/2005 About Virginia Woolf.(1)Virginia Woolf is one of my favorite writers. She was born in London,a member of the Duckworth publishing family.Becauce of her poor health,Virginia was educated at home by her father. In middle age,she described this period in a letter to Vita Sackville-West:"Think how i was brought up!No school, mooning about alone among my father's books;never any change to pick up all that goes on in schools---throwing balls.ragging.slang.vulgarities.scenes.jealousies!" Virginia's youth was shadowed by series of emotional shocks.Gerald Duckworth, her half-brother,sexually abused her.In sketch of the past(1939)she wrote:"I can remember the feel of his hands going under my clothes, going firmly and steadily lower and lower,i remember how i hoped he would stop, how i stiffened and wriggled as his hands approached my private parts. But he did not stop."Julia Jackson Duckworth(her mother)died when she was in her early teens. Stella, her half-sister,took her mother's place but died two years later.Leslie Stephen(her father)suffered a slow death from cancer. When her brother Toby died in 1906,she had a mental breakdown.Vanessa(her sister),whom in childhood Virginia had bathed and slept with ,influenced a lot of her characters. In 1912 she married a political theorist Leonard (Sidney)Woolf(1880--1969).Leonard Woolf was born in London as a son of a barrister. He studied in Cambridge and in 1904 he went in civil service in Ceylon. From 1923 to 1930 he was a literary editor on the Nation. In 1917 he set up a small hand press at Hogart House, and worked as its director untill his death. In the event of a Nazi invastion,Virginia and Leonard had made provisions to kill themselves. After the final attack of mental illness,Virginia loaded her pocket full of stones and drowned herself in the river of Ouse near her Sussex home on March 28,1941. On her final note to her husband she wrote: I have a feeling i shall go mad I cannot go on longer in these terrible times I hear voices and cannot concentrate on my work I have fought against it but cannot fight any longer I owe all my happiness to you but cannot go on and spoil your life.
That's how she spent all her life, and that's all for this time.I'm gonna talk about her works some time later. |
